About
My name is Cubby West Spain.
I have painted throughout my life but in the passed few years I have slowly moved away from my career as a graphic designer to pursue painting more fully.
I grew up in Atlanta, spending weekends with my family in the North Georgia Mountains and most of our summers on Cumberland Island. These times planted in me a love for nature and the beauty of wild places. My work focuses on these landscapes, from national parks across the country to the Blue Ridge Mountains, to Georgia’s well-protected marshlands and barrier islands.
I use line to find the forms in landscapes with water-color, gouache and acrylic as my medium on both canvas and paper. About three years ago I learned that the South was at one time the largest producer of Indigo and that it was a women, by the name of Eliza Lucas in South Carolina, who began the production of this cash crop. Since then I have integrated Indigo into all of my work, as a southern mark.
I have served as; a board member of Atlanta’s Idea Capital Arts Organization, on the steering committee of Lamar Dodd School of Art at the University of Georgia (where I received my BFA) and on the steering committee of WonderRoot and Community Farmers Market’s WonderFarm. I have been a supporter and participant of Atlanta’s arts community since I returned nearly ten years ago and have been the graphic designer for Ponce City Market since 2013.
My work has been shown in New York, Atlanta, Athens and oversees in Venice, Italy.
